The U.S.-based global carrier American Airlines has signed a firm contract to acquire 260 modern, fuel-efficient Airbus A320 Family aircraft, the France-based aircraft manufacturer said Wednesday in a statement.
"The A320 Family of aircraft will help us achieve improved fuel efficiency and other operational savings, while offering our customers state-of-the-art technology and an enhanced travel experience," said Tom Horton, AMR and American Airlines president.
The airline also bought 200 aircraft from Airbus' U.S.-rival Boeing.
With more than 4,700 A320 Family aircraft in airline operation around the world, the A320 Family is recognized as the best sold single-aisle aircraft family today.
The A320neo, covering new A319, A320 and A321 models, was launched in late 2010 and is the latest product innovation at Airbus.
A combination of wingtip devices known as Sharklets and new engine choices can reduce 15 percent fuel burn in flight compared to a traditional design, according to Airbus.
The figure could translate to an annual carbon dioxide reduction of 3,600 metric tons per aircraft.
