Kansai Airport Aims to Double Cargo Capacity
Air Cargo News | Feb. 16, 2007
Japan's Kansai International Airport is planning to double the capacity of its air cargo terminal when the second phase of its construction opens on August 2, 2007.
Located on an artificial island in Izumisano, the second phase includes a second runway and a taxiway connecting the airport's terminal to the second runway. Due to financial difficulties, construction plans for a second taxiway and new terminal buildings are postponed until the number of departures and arrivals at the airport reaches 130,000 a year.
The cargo terminal will be expanded to double its current capacity up to 340,000 square meters, to accommodate expected increases in air cargo. The airport firm expects the airport will handle more than 2 million tons of cargo annually in 10 years from now. This reflects about 2.5 times more than the current volume.
