European Parliament Backs Full Fare Disclosure

On July 11, European Parliament backed a European Commission proposal requiring that carriers operating within the EU advertise fares with all taxes, nonavoidable charges, surcharges and fees known at the time of publication included.
"Air passengers must be treated like other consumers and thus have a right to clear and full information of the price they finally have to pay," the EP said, noting that by adopting the amendment it wants to put an end to misleading advertising and information.
The EP recognized that security taxes and charges are "on the rise" and argued that the consumer has a right to know how high they are and how they are used. Where airport or onboard security costs are included in the ticket price, "those costs shall therefore be shown separately on the ticket or otherwise indicated to the passenger," it said.
