Syed Adam Ahmed, a six-year-old boy from Ontario, Canada, has been deemed as a security threat since he was a toddler, according to his parents. Canada's federal public safety minister has promised to review the boy's case.
The boy's family said they have not yet told him anything regarding the security concerns surrounding him, but they worry that the security checks would soon become more intrusive when the boy grows older, if not sorted at the earliest. According to the family, they have contacted government authorities and the airline staff to find out why their son has been targeted.
"We try to keep him protected from all this stuff, because we don't want him to feel singled out and stigmatised," the CBC News quoted Adam's mother, Khadija Cajee, as saying. Adam's parents never got a clear answer from the staff at the Transportation and Public Safety departments regarding the issue.
However, according to the boy's mother, an Air Canada agent tipped them off when Adam was a toddler. "A lot of times they think it's my husband so they look at him, but he always says to them, 'No, it's the little guy down there,'" she said.
Sulemaan Ahmed, Adam's father, said that they are intercepted every time they attempt to cross the border by air or land. According to him, it again happened on a New Year's Eve post on which he took to Twitter asking Air Canada for an explanation on why the child's name has been included on the no-fly list.
Air Canada replied to his tweet by saying that though it has no control over these matters, it would like to get in touch with him and provide guidance. Sulemaan worked as a flight attendant with Air Canada for four years and lived in Montreal during that time.
