China Eastern Plans 990,000 Flights During Spring Festival Travel Rush

China Eastern Airlines plans to operate 990,000 flights totally during the annual Spring Festival travel rush, effective from January 13 to February 21, an increase of 9 percent year on year.
According to an estimate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), Chinese airlines will transport up to 58.3 million people during the 40-day travel rush, up 10 percent over the same period last year. More than 470,000 flights were operated during the travel peak, offering 70 million seats.
As of January 11, the aviation regulators have approved 25,665 extra flights, including 22,595 domestic flights, 1,190 regional flights and 1,880 international flights.
On January 13, the first day of Spring Festival travel rush, Chinese airlines operated 13,970 flights totally, up 8 percent over a year earlier.
To meet the increasing travel demands, the Shanghai-based carrier will add 3,200 flights including 2,800 domestic flights. Meanwhile, it will offer 16 million seats totally and transport over 12 million people during the travel rush.
In accordance with passengers' needs for reunions, as many as 2,800 flights will be added to domestic routes, including flights from Xi'an to Fuzhou, Wenzhou, Lanzhou, Yinchuan, Lahsa, as well as flights connecting Guangzhou with East China, etc. The airline will deploy wide-body aircraft on 3,000 flights to Hainan, Beijing, northwestern and southern region, etc.
Meanwhile, China Eastern is scheduled to operate about 400 extra flights on international and regional routes, covering Southeast Asia, Japan, South Korea, Australia and Singapore, including round-trip flights linking Kunming and Ho Chi Minh City, Chiang Mai in Thailand and Tokyo in Japan.
