The A380 successfully completed its passenger evacuation test yesterday, "paving the way [for European aviation authorities] to certify the aircraft in time for delivery by the end of 2006," Airbus said.
The aircraft, A380 MSN7, was fitted with a very-high-density cabin layout featuring 853 seats, all of which were occupied. In addition, there were two cockpit crewmembers and 18 cabin crew from Lufthansa onboard to manage the evacuation.
All 873 participants were able to evacuate the aircraft and reach the ground within 90 sec. with only half of the A380's 16 exits in operation. Initial wire service reports had the aircraft emptied in 80 sec., although this could not be confirmed. The test was carried out at an Airbus facility in Hamburg.
Airbus said one person suffered a broken leg in the evacuation and there were a few minor injuries to other participants as well. "We will support them in every way we can," COO and A380 Program Head Charles Champion stated.
It was the largest evacuation demonstration ever conducted and the first involving a passenger aircraft being evacuated from both decks. The trial was performed under the supervision of the European Aviation Safety Agency and representation from US FAA.
"Although the final number as confirmed by [EASA] will only be known in a few days, we are very happy with this result," Champion stated. "It clears the way for the transportation of passengers as defined by our initial customers who all have selected very comfortable three-class layouts. And even in a higher density two-class layout, the A380 cabin will continue to set new standards of comfort."
