Freight amount of HKIA broke the record

The amount of freight handled by Hong Kong International Airport in March has broken the record in one single month whilst it reached 320,000 tonne. At the same time, passenger numbers and the number of aircraft take-off and landing also get a stable increase.
The freight of Hong Kong International Airport increases after the Lunar new year holiday period, and remains a strong increasing trend, in addition, the freight demands of principal markets such as US, Europe & Japan continue to rise, bringing along the increases of freight amount in March. Compared with the same period of last year, the amplitude is roughly 10%.
The number of business travelers also increase rapidly after the Lunar new year holiday, stimulate the number of passengers up to 3,550,000 persons in March. Compared with Easter of last March, this was still a 7% increase. The number of aircraft take-off and landings increase 10.8% with the continuous increase of passengers and freights.
Commercial Director of the Airport Authority (AA) Mr Hans Bakker welcomed the latest figures. "Growth trends of international and regional cargo remain strong. We expect the current growth momentum to sustain in April in view of the anticipated surge in export before the Chinese Mainland's Labour Holiday," he said.
For the full financial year of 2005/2006 ended in March, passenger and air cargo throughput totalled 41.6 million and 3.48 million tonnes, increasing by 8.7% and 10.5% year-on-year respectively. The aircraft movements grew 11.4% to 270,000.
