Melbourne Airport Welcomes New Jetstar Route
Melbourne Airport | Sep. 14, 2006
On 14th September, Melbourne Airport welcomed the announcement by Melbourne-based Jetstar Airways confirming their plans for twice-weekly services from Melbourne direct to Honolulu.
The services are set to commence on 29 December, with Jetstar operating 303-seat, two-class A330-200 aircraft between Melbourne and Honolulu.
Melbourne Airport CEO Chris Barlow welcomed the announcement from Jetstar as great news for Victorian travellers.
"These new direct services from Melbourne to Hawaii will ensure passengers can now fly non-stop to this popular leisure destination, reducing travel times and ending long waits in Sydney - where in the past travellers have had to waste precious beach time transferring between terminals", said Mr Barlow.
Mr Barlow also added that the new Hawaii services would provide additional connections to mainland USA, with Jetstar confirming a code-share and interline ticketing arrangement that will enable passengers to book flights from Melbourne with Jetstar, and then travel onto a range of major American destinations including Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
"The USA is one of the most popular destinations for Australian residents departing from Melbourne - with over 100,000 passengers flying to the USA from Melbourne each year. Jetstar's announcement is encouraging, as it will provide additional seat capacity and price competition between Melbourne and the USA", he said.
The announcement of Jetstar's plans for Melbourne-Honolulu flights follows the airline's announcement of its plan to serve Bangkok three times weekly and Bali twice weekly direct from Melbourne, with these services to commence in November and December this year respectively.
Jetstar's inaugural long-haul international flight is set to depart Melbourne Airport on 23 November to Bangkok.
