Melbourne Airport Inc. | Oct. 18, 2006
Melbourne Airport CEO and Launceston Airport Chairman Chris Barlow was last night named 'Australian Aviation Personality of the Year' at the 2006 Australian Airports Association (AAA) Awards.
The award was presented to Chris Barlow for his sustained contribution to aviation and tourism development and his strong partnership approach to working with stakeholders. Mr Barlow is widely recognised across the industry for promoting increased international airline capacity to ensure Australia-wide benefits of tourism growth.
Mr Barlow thanked the Australian aviation industry for its strong support during his six years as CEO of Melbourne Airport and Chairman of Launceston Airport, saying he was incredibly humbled by the award.
"I'm delighted to receive this award from my peers. It is the culmination for me of what has been a rewarding, challenging and fun six years as CEO," said Mr Barlow.
"I see this award as fantastic recognition for how we do business at Melbourne and Launceston Airports - and is a great acknowledgment of the hard work and dedication of my team."
During his time as CEO and Managing Director of APAC, the operator of Melbourne and Launceston Airports, Mr Barlow has coordinated an extraordinary range of airport development projects, including the 5-year, AU$500M airport expansion and upgrade of Melbourne Airport. This program has collectively delivered the most comprehensive terminal and airfield upgrade since the airport was opened in 1970.
Mr Barlow has positioned airports as significant contributors to national economic growth. He is a Board member of TTF Australia, the tourism industry's peak lobby group. He is also a Board member of the Melbourne Visitor and Convention Bureau (MCVB).
In August this year Mr Barlow announced his plans to retire as CEO and Managing Director of APAC in March 2007, concluding a 35-year career in aviation in Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada. He will remain in Australia and plans to take up a number of board appointments.
The AAA Awards recognise leadership and excellence in Australian aviation and are judged by an independent judging panel.
