30 Killed in Cargo Plane Crash in Iraq
Jan. 10, 2007
On January 9, a cargo plane carrying Turkish workers crashed during landing at an airport near Baghdad, killing 30 people and injuring two, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said.
Initial reports indicated the plane crashed due to bad weather and heavy fog in Baghdad, a Foreign Ministry official said on condition of anonymity because an official announcement had not yet been authorized.
"The plane came down at about midday Turkish time some 2.5 kilometers to the northwest of Balad," the official said.
The Antonov-26 plane had taken off from an airport in Turkey's southern city of Adana and was carrying construction workers from the Kulak construction company, the governor of Adana said.
On board were 29 Turks and one American, as well as a crew of three from Moldova, one from Russia and one from Ukraine, the governor said.
Turkey's ambassador to Iraq, speaking to CNN Turk television, put the death toll at 32.
Balad is the main U.S. military logistics hub in Iraq about 80 kilometers north of the capital Baghdad. Turkish media had initially reported that the crash occurred in Baghdad.
