Qantas's low-cost subsidiary Jetstar has not let the takeover offer for its full service parent crimp its aggressive expansion plans for Asia.

The airline's chief executive, Alan Joyce, is expected to add Kuala Lumpur to Jetstar's list of long haul destinations, amid talk the Malaysian low-cost airline AirAsia is planning to launch flights to Australia by the end of the year.

Jetstar's planned launch of three weekly Sydney to KL flights in September will come when the airline is expected to take delivery of its sixth Airbus 330-200. It will also be Jetstar's eighth long-haul destination.

The new service also adds weight to the growing expectation that Jetstar - which Qantas concedes has a 40 per cent lower cost base than its own - will become the sole growth engine of the Qantas Group's international network. The KL service will codeshare with Qantas.

Meanwhile, the Airline Partners Australia consortium bidding for Qantas attempted to hose down public concern about its AU$11.1 billion offer, saying it had "constructive meetings" with the Transport Workers Union and Australian & International Pilots Association.

But the consortium still declined to say whether it planned to scrap union-negotiated enterprise bargaining agreements with Qantas staff and favour the Australian Workplace Agreements increasingly in vogue at the lower-paying Jetstar. In a media release, the consortium would only say it would "provide a fair work environment for its employees, offering competitive conditions, jobs growth and career opportunities".

APA said in a statement the offer would not affect employee entitlements and travel benefits. But it failed to provide any indication how it would approach future negotiations with unions, such as Qantas's largest union - the Australian Services Union - which is due to start wages talks in the next few weeks.

APA has also failed to meet the ACTU, which is representing other Qantas unions.

Qantas chairwoman Margaret Jackson also told the Financial Times the private equity bidders for the airline had a long-term vision in their investment.

This is despite some members of the consortium already setting lofty returns - and remuneration targets - for their planned investment over the next two years.

"Equity market performance is based on short-term measures," Ms Jackson said.

She also said the sharemarket never properly valued the airline.

"If you look at the challenges Qantas faced, we did an extraordinary job but this was never reflected in the share price," Ms Jackson said.

She told the Financial Times that directors under private ownership would also have more time to focus on Qantas's strategy.
