Indian Retailer to Launch In-house Air Cargo Flights
Air Cargo News | Jan. 22, 2007
Indian retailer, Reliance, is considering the launch of its own air cargo services. The aircraft would ferry fresh fruit and vegetables from various destinations in North India, starting early next year.
The Indian Economic Times reports that Reliance is evaluating the purchase of 50 cargo aircraft from Boeing through a sale-lease-buyback agreement. Apart from Reliance, other Indian retailers like Tata, Birla and Bharti, are also expected to integrate their logistics supply chains buy purchasing their own aircraft.
As there are currently only eight dedicated freighters ferrying cargo in and out of the country, the retailers' move might shake-up the Indian air cargo industry dramatically. However, some of the retailers may launch the air cargo services together with domestic carriers.
