Qantas Rapped over Staff Training
ABC News | Feb. 27, 2010
WorkCover New South Wales has issued Qantas with two improvement notices relating to staff training for emergency evacuations and baggage handling.
Newspaper reports say that Qantas employees at Sydney's domestic airport have not received proper training in emergency procedures and some have not taken part in an emergency drill since 2001.
WorkCover has not confirmed the circumstances but says it has issued the two improvement notices.
Qantas says it has detailed emergency procedures in place and is committed to meeting all government Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
The Transport Workers' Union says the notices issued last week are long overdue.
One of the notices relates to the working conditions of baggage handlers, who according to union spokesman Mick Pieri are being dangerously overworked.
"That constant wear and tear on the guys, day in, day out, we've now got a high percentage of worker's comp, which is just unbelievable," he said.
