A pilot has escaped injury after overshooting a runway at Melbourne's Moorabbin Airport.

The 72-year-old man was trying to land his Piper Warrior craft when the plane clipped a tree and landed in a nearby golf course.

He was treated for shock by ambulance crews at the scene.
