Jetstar's chief pilot says he is not worried if some pilot trainers have not flown the type of plane they are teaching students about.

Representatives of the airline and parent company Qantas have given evidence to a Senate inquiry into airline safety.

Jetstar chief pilot Mark Rindfleish says it is possible that training captains are teaching staff how to fly Airbus planes they themselves have not flown.

"The trainers that are used by inflight training are very, very experienced airline pilots, and very, very experienced trainers," he said.

"They then go through a qualification process that makes them very familiar with the training onto Airbus.

"It doesn't concern me, because before they come into Jetstar they must go through a transition process and that sets the standard.

"If they're not up to standard then they don't go to fly our aeroplanes until they are."
