Beijing Capital International Airport has become China's first smoke-free international air hub. Starting on May 31, the airport shut down up to 36 smoking rooms in all three terminals.
The airport official said the latest smoking measures are introduced to create a healthy traveling environment for passengers.
Workers and volunteers from the airport as well as staff from Beijing's public health campaign office distributed anti-smoking brochures to passengers in Terminal 3 on Tuesday morning.
The airport said it has closed all smoking rooms since midnight today as a part of blanket smoking ban. Meanwhile, the airport prepared no-smoking notices, promotional materials and other tools indoors and outdoors to carry out the anti-smoking campaign.
Moreover, the airport held training for fire inspectors, cleaners and other employees and strengthened patrolling and inspection. The smoker will be persuaded to stop and given a clear explanation.
The suspended smoking rooms will not open to public again, and their future role remains undecided, airport officials said.
