State-owned flag-carrier LOT Polish Airlines expects to receive its first Dreamliner 787, Boeing Co.'s (BA) new passenger jet, in the second quarter of 2012, with the delivery of three more expected by the end of next year, the airline said Monday.
LOT is still working on a route network for the expected Dreamliners, and said it is "still too early to announce specific destinations."
The airline noted, however, that the Boeing 787 can fly much longer routes than LOT's Boeing 767s, which are currently flying the airline's transatlantic routes.
"This gives [the Dreamliners] the possibility of direct international flights to Asia or North America," LOT said. "The Dreamliner has a range that allows voyages as far away as Warsaw to Los Angeles."
The Polish airline plans to start training courses for its pilots in early 2012, but is still in the process of determining the exact schedule, LOT added.
In April, LOT chartered one Boeing 767-300 from Air Italy to fly its Warsaw-to-Chicago route from last April to mid-May, a stretch of time that included the Easter Holiday and another long weekend in Poland.
Chicago has a sizable Polish-American population.
LOT opted to hire an aircraft from another carrier due to the surging demand for transatlantic flights during the spring season and also because one of LOT's long-haul crafts was undergoing a technical inspection, LOT said.
