Former Ansett employees have finally received their last payment of entitlements, ten years after the airline went into administration.

Around 15,000 people lost their job when Ansett went under in 2001.

The administrator KordaMentha has spent the last decade selling off the airline's assets, including a terminal at Sydney airport and more than 10 million spare parts.

KordaMentha's Mark Korda says it was the biggest administration in Australian history.

"It was not only large, but of course it was difficult, and it affected the lives of so many Australians," he said.

Mr Korda said employees received the bulk of their money in the first three years along with a dividend every Christmas for the remaining years, leading up to the 14th and final dividend payment this week.

Ansett's former employees have now received an average of 96 cents of every AU$1 they were owed by the airline.

That marked the effective end of the administration, the biggest and one of the most complex in Australian corporate history.

"What this does is bring total closure, we're done and we're finished," Mr Korda said.

"This final chapter does not ease the pain, but it helps bring closure," he added.

Some employees who worked at Ansett for decades were owed hundreds of thousands of dollars in entitlements when the airline collapsed.

Mr Korda says the outcome for employees has been far better than predicted.

The initial estimates were that employees would receive 40 to 45 cents on the dollar from a fire sale of assets, he said.

"I think in the circumstances it's a very good result."

Former Ansett worker David Lupton says the workers launched a strong campaign to get their money.

"People lost a hell of a lot, so to come this far is a great achievement," he said.

Melbourne man Wayne Harrold, who worked as a car fleet manager at Ansett for nine years, says long-time workers would be extremely happy with the total amount they were able to get back.

"We were told that we were probably lucky to get 50 cents in the dollar," he said.

In total, AU$8 million was paid out this week, AU$5.3 million to employees and the rest to the Federal Government to repay staff entitlements previously advanced under a special assistance program.

Mr Korda said hundreds of former Ansett employees had worked on the administration and selling of assets in the last decade, with the last finishing this week.

"They're the unsung heroes of the asset realisation process," he said.
