More buses, trains and planes are being put on to help transport passengers stranded as a result of the dispute between Qantas and the unions.

Virgin Australia says it is laying on an extra 3,000 seats on flights between Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Mackay in Queensland today.

Spokeswoman Emma Copeman says more than 20,000 Qantas passengers took up a special fare offer on the weekend.

"We have had quite a few bookings across our network and we're doing our best to put on extra capacity to help with demand," she said.

Countrylink has put on extra carriages on trains between capital cities on the east coast.

Greyhound's Tony Hopkins said the coach company had experienced a big increase in bookings.

"We've already put some extra services on for this morning between Sydney and Canberra and indeed, for the night, between Melbourne and Adelaide," he said.

Mr Hopkins said while the extra business is great, it was better for Greyhound in the long term for Qantas to be flying and bringing in customers from overseas.

"In the short term we're getting a little bit of business out of it but in the long term for us, 35 per cent of our customers come from overseas, international backpackers and such, and having a good aviation industry in Australia is good for all tourism operators," he said.
