All Nippon Airways (ANA) put Boeing Co.'s 787 Dreamliner in regular domestic services on Tuesday morning, starting with flights on the route connecting Tokyo International Airport at Haneda and Okayama Airport, western Japan.
The first Dreamliner on the route took off from Haneda at 7:42 a.m., 12 minutes behind schedule, with all 265 passenger seats filled.
ANA will also begin regular services with the cutting-edge midsize jetliner between Haneda and Hiroshima Airport in the afternoon, and on other western Japan routes linking Haneda and Osaka International Airport at Itami, Yamaguchi Ube Airport, and Matsuyama Airport by March next year.
The major Japanese carrier's strategy is to introduce the plane on routes directly competing with Shinkansen bullet train services as well as on short- to medium-distance services, company officials said.
In a flight inauguration ceremony at Haneda, ANA President Shinichiro Ito said he is proud of the 787 because a third of the aircraft is made with Japan's advanced technologies.
