China's national flag carrier Air China Ltd.'s first Wi-Fi flight landed at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport Tuesday morning, marking the success of the first flight offering Wi-Fi internet service on board in China.
The Beijing-based carrier continues to provide the Wi-Fi internet service on a Boeing 737-800 aircraft operating the Beijing-Chengdu-Beijing flights until Dec. 31, 2011.
It is the first Wi-Fi flight in China. The move marks the nation's civil aviation sector entry into an "in-flight wireless internet era". Passengers can use their laptops and tablet computers to access the wireless local area network during flight and enjoy more advanced in-flight entertainment.
The in-flight wireless internet access provides new services -- movies, music and bookshop -- for passengers. Besides, passengers can also obtain information about travel service, shopping, hotel reservations and car rentals through the Wi-Fi service. Furthermore, the E-chat platform makes the in-flight communication between passengers possible.
The carrier said it has no plan to charge passengers for the Wi-Fi service currently. However, mobile phones must be turned off during the flight for the safety reason. The airline confirmed that it will make efforts to provide air-to-ground communications service through the Wi-Fi network in the future, by that time, passenger will be able to access the Internet during flight.
The airline will install the Wi-Fi system on all of its fleet gradually in the future. The service will make passengers' flight experience more enjoyable. Soon a Wi-Fi installed A321 plane will be put into service and operate the flights between Beijing and Shanghai.
