Whopper Deal: Boeing Lands Biggest-Ever Plane Order

Boeing has landed what is being called the largest-ever commercial airplane order for the U.S. jetmaker.
The Associated Press says the 230-jet order from private Indonesian carrier Lion Air gives Boeing an order that "(tops) its own record set less than a week ago."
The previous record order came on Sunday, as the 2011 Dubai Airshow kicked off with Dubai-based carrier Emirates ordering 50 Boeing 777 jets. At list prices, that works out to be about US$18 billion, which Boeing said at the time was its biggest ever by value.
The Lion Air deal, however, did not come from the ongoing Dubai Airshow, which wraps up today.
Instead, that news came from the White House, which trumpeted the deal as part of President Barack Obama's trip to Bali, Indonesia.
Reuters says the Lion Air deal -- valued at US$21.7 billion at list prices -- comes as Obama "wraps up his Asia-Pacific tour. ... Obama will attend a signing ceremony on Friday for the order for 230 aircraft on the sidelines of an East Asia Summit he is attending on the Indonesian island of Bali."
The White House says the deal will support more than 110,000 jobs across the United States, according to Reuters.
As for the details of the Lion Air order, AP says it "includes 201 of the redesigned Boeing 737 'MAX' and 29 extended range 737s. Lion Air has options for 150 more planes, valued at US$14 billion, bringing the deal's total potential value to US$35 billion."
In addition to becoming Boeing's biggest-ever order based on list-price values, AP notes that "the 230 planes also tops Boeing's volume order record." Boeing's previous volume-order record came just this past July, when American Airlines ordered 200 Boeing 737 jets in a massive 460-jet order that it split with Boeing - rival Airbus.
Back to today's news, Reuters adds:
In addition to the Lion Air deal, the White House announced on Thursday that Boeing had also reached a US$2.4 billion deal for Singapore Airlines to buy eight wide body aircraft (Boeing 777-300ERs).
The White House said GE will sell 50 engines to Indonesia's Garuda Airlines in an agreement worth US$1.3 billion.
