A China Southern Airlines charter flight has landed at Gold Coast - the latest of the nation's airports to come onto the fast-growing Chinese giant's route map.
According to China Southern Airlines president and COO Tan Wan'geng, the new charter flight is part of the airline's expansion in Australia, as it makes the country a key part of its international growth.
"We will make greater efforts at the other end of these kangaroo routes to make our Guangzhou hub an important gateway hub into China and even into the Asia-Pacific region as well as an ideal transfer centre between Australia and Europe," Wan'geng said.
Australia has been chosen by the airline as a focal for its global operations because of its huge amount of trade and tourism interest and historic links it had with southern China.
"China Southern's Australia strategy is important for our integration into the international marketplace and the development of our worldwide brand," said Wan'geng.
China Southern's Australian network has grown swiftly, with 35 weekly flights to four Australian destinations this year from 10 services per week in 2009.
"From January to November this year, China Southern Airlines carried some 498,000 passengers from mainland China to Australia and New Zealand, a year-on-year increase of 114.1 percent and almost 30 percent of the total traffic between the two markets," said Wan'geng.
"China Southern Airlines has received generous coordination and support from the Australian government, tourism bureau, airports and all sectors of the society as we further introduce ourselves to the Australian business and leisure communities."
The Guangzhou based airline has been operating in Australia for more than 10 years, with current twice a day Guangzhou-Sydney flights, 11 times weekly to Melbourne, four to Brisbane and three to Perth.
China Southern will also be launching flights to London next June and will increase capacity to Vancouver, Paris and Amsterdam.
China Southern has a total of 430 fleet which flies to 150 domestic destinations and 50 international destinations.
