The expansion project at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, including its second terminal building and third runway, will be in use before the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Construction of the project, which started in December 2005, will be wrapped up within this year, Shanghai Airport Authority, operator of the city's two civil airfields, said on April 4.
The authority also plans to finish the preliminary inspection of the new terminal and runway by the end of this year.
According to a detailed timetable, the interior decoration of the second terminal building will be completed in July. The indoor space of the terminal is 1.3 million square meters.
A hotel, with a floor area totalling 36,000 square meters, attached to the terminal is expected to be built in October.
The operator also plans to finish the testing of the terminal's power system by the year end.
Major construction work on the airport's third runway is expected to be done in September.
The expansion project also includes a cargo center with an annual capacity of 1.2 million tons.
