Australia: Sydney Airport Officially Opened T2 Redevelopment
Apr. 11, 2007
On April 11, the AU$20 million redevelopment of Sydney Airport's T2 was officially opened by Mr Max Moore-Wilton, Chairman of Sydney Airport Corporation Limited and has already proved to be extremely popular with passengers.
T2 is the domestic terminal used by airlines including Virgin Blue, Jetstar, Rex, QantasLink and Aeropelican.
The CEO of Sydney Airport, Russell Balding, said that "T2 is now the busiest and most popular terminal at Sydney Airport."
"The feedback we are getting on the new look terminal is extremely positive. A recent survey of passengers has found that 83% were satisfied with the range of food and beverage outlets, an increase of 18 percentage points on last year while 89% were satisfied with the overall appearance & cleanliness of T2 - up 9 percentage points on last year," he said.
The new development provides passengers and their well-wishers with more options and more choice. The number of retail and food outlets has increased from 26 to 41 providing a more comprehensive offering in line with passengers stated needs. Mr Balding said that "we have even added a day spa and a pub because different passengers have different ways of relaxing before a flight."
The retail precinct benefits from an abundance of natural light and space which makes it a great space to pause and sample any number of food or beverage offerings or simply relax and enjoy the fantastic views over the airfield.
The upgrade also included the reorientation and expansion of security screening, improvements to lighting, new floor surfaces and toilets, and improved signage to assist passenger movement through the Terminal.
A project of this type is no easy task as the Terminal must remain fully-functional throughout the entire process. The project was carried out in six stages to minimise disruption and inconvenience to passengers and staff.
More than 10 million passengers pass through T2 each year - making it the busiest of the three terminals at Sydney Airport. T2 is a critical part of Sydney's transport and tourism infrastructure.
The upgrade is all about meeting the needs and expectations of the modern travellers.
"T2 is particularly important to the leisure and tourism market so this upgrade is a very important contribution to the first and last impressions of Sydney for many people," Mr Balding said.
