An annual study by the magazine Business Traveller has revealed the amount of space passengers get when they fly on 32 different airlines.

Ryanair was found to have the narrowest seats -- offering just 16 inches of width -- while its no-frills rival easyJet came 31st in terms of legroom, permitting passengers just 29 inches.

The Irish carrier fared slightly better for legroom - it came 24th, providing fliers with 30 inches. easyJet performed well in terms of width - the 17.5 inches it allows passengers placed it sixth in the study.

British Airways was the only other UK airline to feature. It came 21st in terms of legroom, giving travellers between 30 and 31 inches, and eighth for width, offering between 17.3 and 18.1 inches.

Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines give its customers the most space to stretch their legs, according to the survey, at 32 inches, although All Nippon Airways offers between 31 and 28 inches, depending on the aircraft.

Emirates came top in terms of width, providing bottoms with between 18.5 and 20.5 inches of sprawling space.

Of the nine airlines that offer premium economy seating, Turkish Airlines was found to be the most generous. The extra money gives passenger 46 inches of legroom and 19.5 inches of width.

Of those airlines that offer fully flat beds, Cathay Pacific's are the most liberally proportioned, at 81 to 82 inches.
