A project to trial remote landing technology at Alice Springs Airport will finally start in January.

The Airservices Australia (AsA) venture uses a set of specialised cameras to help air traffic controllers in Adelaide coordinate landings in Alice Springs.

The trial was meant to start earlier this year but strategy manager Craig Deitch says the hardware being developed in Sweden was delayed.

He says the trial is the first step in providing remote towers to outback airfields across the country.

"We'll be setting up a little room, what we call a remote tower clad in a room in Adelaide," he said.

"In there we hope to replicate as much of Alice Springs tower as we can to provide the controllers, and they will be Alice Springs controllers, the views of Alice Springs Airport so they feel at home."

He says it is cheaper to install this technology than building control towers on remote airfields.

"We can keep staff at major centres rather than some of the let's say more challenging places to get staff to move to, we can use this technology to provide a service at a place and then if the industrial cycle changes and traffic drops we can then take the equipment out and not have this stranded asset sitting there costing us a lot of money," he said.
