The feasibility study report for an airport in Boao, the venue of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) located on the east coast of Hainan Province, has gotten approval from National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the construction is set to begin in the first half of 2013, according to Hainan Provincial Development and Reform Commission. A new airport covering an area of 9,000 square kilometers is expected to be completed and put into service in 2015, with a total investment of 1.127 billion yuan.
Following the grant of the 3rd Hainan airport by the State Council in June 2011, it has gotten many supports from related authorities including the State Council, NDRC, and Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). Especially, after CAAC issued its industrial views, NDRC accelerated the multiple procedures on check, countersignature and deliberation within 14 days, and approved its feasibility study report on Dec. 31, 2012.
The new airport will be constructed with a total investment of 1.127 billion yuan, of which 374 million yuan comes from Civil Aviation Development Fund and 256 million yuan from budget of the central government. The overall layout of Boao Airport has been ratified and the design is ready to follow up, according to a provincial official.
To be a domestic regional airport, Boao Airport will be able to handle 480,000 passengers and 1,440 tons of cargo by the year of 2020. Specifically, a 2,600-meter runway and 26 parking bays will be built at the initial stage, along with a new terminal building covering an area of 9,000 square meters. In addition, it will be able to accommodate a variety of aircraft, including Boeing 737 and Airbus A320.
Designed to meet the demands of private planes and business jets for domestic and foreign dignitaries who come to participate in the BFA, Boao Airport will facilitate travel to Boao and provide with safe and convenient air service; Meanwhile it will promote the development of the general aviation industry in Hainan, which further improves the civil airports layout of "Two Major Airports in North and South, Two Regional Airports in East and West", and plays an important role in making Hainan into a world-class island resort destination and an important platform for international economic cooperation and cultural exchanges.
According to 1:8 of the civil aviation industry input-output ratio, it is estimated that the new airport will bring economic benefit of more than 9 billion yuan, and enhance the image of Qionghai city in culture, promoting the development of the eastern and even the provincial's tourism industry.
