Construction of Boao Airport to Start in May

Construction of Boao airport is expected to begin in May, according to a Qionghai municipal government source.
The new airport in Boao, the venue of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) located on the east coast of Hainan province, is Hainan's third civil airport after Haikou Meilan International Airport (HAK) and Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX). Boao airport is designed to be a regional airport.
An official of Qionghai municipal government said, with the growing influence and expansion of BFA, as well as the surging tourists from home and abroad, Boao airport will highlight the role of serving BFA and guaranteeing the operation of business jets and private aircraft, on the basis of acting as a regional airport.
When the project is completed, the airport will be able to accommodate passenger aircraft like the Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A320, as well as business jet and private aircraft. It is learnt that the airport is designed to handle 480,000 passengers and 1,440 tonnes of cargo and mail per year by 2020.
Boao Airport will be a 4C class airport with a runway of 2,600 meters in length and 45 meters in width, as well as a terminal building covering 9,000 square meters and 26 parking bays.
The new airport will be constructed with a total investment of 1.127 billion yuan, with 256 million yuan invested by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), and 374 million yuan by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), while the rest will be supported by the Hainan provincial government.
Construction of Boao airport is expected to begin in May, the official said, upon the completion of Boao airport project, it will not only optimize the airport layout in Hainan province and the transportation system in the east of the province, but also promote the development of local tourism and economy. In addition, the airport project is set to improve the service level of BFA and speed up the development of business jet market.
