A popular Indian disc jockey has been arrested at Dubai's airport for possession of the party drug ecstasy, his family said on June 6.
DJ Aqueel, famous for Bollywood song remixes, was on his way home from Dubai on June 5 when security personnel allegedly found two ecstasy tablets on him, his wife Farha told the NDTV and Aaj Tak news channels.
"The Dubai Airport authorities found 0.4 mg of ecstasy on him. He was taken away by the anti-narcotics department for a blood test, the report of which was negative," she said, adding he had been released from detention but barred from leaving the United Arab Emirates.
"He is innocent, he has never taken any drugs," said Farha, a jewellery designer and daughter of Bollywood actor-producer Sanjay Khan.
Aqueel, who also runs a well-known Mumbai nightclub, is not the first Indian celebrity to be detained in the Gulf on drugs charges recently.
Bollywood comic actor Vijay Raaz and famous Indian fashion coordinator Prasad Bidappa were detained in Dubai on similar charges in 2005.
