Two Killed in Jet Crash Near Los Angeles
Jul. 03, 2007
A four-passenger jet hit a high-tension power line in northern San Diego County on July 3, killing two people, officials said.
The jet crashed in foggy conditions early in the morning shortly after takeoff from McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad in northern San Diego, more than 100 kilometers south of Los Angeles, a spokeswoman for the Carlsbad Fire Department said.
After hitting the power line, the plane apparently came to rest on a local road, said Jennifer Howell, a police dispatcher.
Two fires were reported, one to the plane and the other to nearby vegetation. Both were quickly extinguished.
Rescue workers found two bodies at the scene. No identifications were immediately available. It remained unclear whether the two dead were on board the jet or on the ground when the accident happened.
An investigation was under way into the cause for the crash, but officials suspected poor visibility as the cause.
