The last three McDonnell Douglas MD-80 aircraft of SAS have been retired from operations after a farewell flight on Oct. 26, 2013, ending 28 years of service with the airline. The MD-80 series has been serving SAS since 1985.
One of the last three MD-80 aircraft performed the special flight, carrying out a 2-hour tour of Denmark. Flypasts were made at Aalborg and Billund airports, followed by the Storebælt and Øresund bridges. Finally, the MD-80 made a low pass at Copenhagen airport, before landing for the last time as part of the airline's fleet.
"For sure, the MD-80 is an iconic aircraft and anybody who has flown in one knows how unique it is. Although it is with a tinge of sadness that I say goodbye to the MD-80, in its place, we continue to phase in Boeing 737NG and Airbus A320's every month and in less than three years," said Alan Sparling, Country Manager for SAS in Ireland.
