The aviation industry is marking 100 years since the first scheduled commercial flight took off on Jan. 1, 1914. During the past 100 years, a great amount of airlines were founded, but many of them failed to stand the test of time. Here is a list of the top 10 oldest airlines in the world which are still in operation today.
1. KLM
KLM was founded on October 7, 1919. The full name of this airline is Koninklijke Luchvaart Maatschappij N.V. (Royal Dutch Airlines). It is the flag carrier of the Netherlands. Operations stopped during World War II apart from the operations in the Dutch Antilles in the Caribbean. KLM's headquarters is in Amstelveen near its hub at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. It is the oldest airline in the world still operating under its original name. It was merged with Air France in 2004.
2. Avianca
Avianca was founded on December 5, 1919. It is the national airline for Columbia and with its headquarters based in Bogotá and is the second largest airline in Latin America. It is the world's second oldest airline by foundation date.
3. Qantas
Qantas was founded on November 16, 1920. It is the flag carrier of Australia and the largest airline in Australia. The name was originally "QANTAS", an acronym for "Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services". It is nicknamed "The Flying Kangaroo". The carrier is headquartered in the City of Botany Bay, Sydney and its main airport is also Sydney.
4. Aeroflot
Aeroflot was founded on February 9, 1923. It is the flag carrier and largest airline of the Russian Federation. During the Soviet era, Aeroflot was the Soviet national airline and the largest airline in the world. The airline operates domestic and international passenger services, mainly from its hub at Sheremetyevo International Airport. The carrier is 51%-owned by the Russian Government.
5. Czech Airlines
Czech Airlines was founded on October 6, 1923. It was only the second airline to use jet passenger planes in 1957. The carrier is headquartered at the Vaclav-Havel Airport, Prague and it is now part of the Czech Aeroholding Group that also owns the airport.
6. Finnair
Finnair was founded on November 1, 1923. It is the flag carrier for Finland and is 55.8% owned by the government. Its main airport is Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and its headquarters are in Vantaa. With no fatal or hull-loss accidents since 1963, it has also been ranked one of the safest airlines in the world.
7. Delta
Delta Air Lines was founded on May 30, 1924. With its headquarters in Atlanta, Delta is the oldest airline in the U.S. Delta was the world's largest airline in terms of fleet size and scheduled passenger traffic in 2013.
8. Tajik Air
Tajik Air was founded on September 3, 1924. It is the national airline for Tajikistan and is headquartered at Dushanbe International Airport.
9. Air Serbia
Air Serbia was founded on June 17, 1927. Based at Belgrade Nicola Tesla Airport, it is the flag carrier and largest airline of Serbia. The airline was formerly known as JAT Airways until it was renamed in 2013. Air Serbia commenced operations under its new name on October 26, 2013.
10. Iberia
Iberia was founded on June 28, 1927. It is the flag carrier and the largest airline of Spain. Based in Madrid, it operates an international network of services from its main bases of Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport and Barcelona El Prat Airport. Although merged with British Airways in 2011 to form the International Airlines Group (IAG), it still operates under its own name.
