Australia: CASA's Steve Swift Receives Prestigious Safety Award
Oct. 12, 2007
An idea that presents the theory of aircraft structural inspection as a simple diagram has been awarded the prestigious Whittle Safety Award by the International Federation of Airworthiness.
The award, named after jet engine co-inventor Frank Whittle, is the federation's highest for advancing air safety.
It was handed to Australia-based Civil Aviation Safety Authority's Steve Swift at a recent seminar in Seoul.
Mr Swift came up with a diamond-shaped diagram which judges described as a new and better way of understanding and analysing damage tolerance.
IFA vice-president Ron Yates said the diamond's simplicity and symmetry made it clear, memorable and teachable.
