Fire in Duty Free Store Delays Flights at Melbourne Airport
AAP | Nov. 10, 2007
Two international flights have been delayed by a fire in a duty free store at Melbourne Airport on Nov. 10.
The fire, caused by an electrical fault, was quickly extinguished just after 8pm by overhead sprinklers but there was still a lot of smoke in the international terminal, Melbourne Airport spokesman Geoffrey Conaghan said.
"We're waiting for the extractor fans to put it all out," Mr Conaghan said.
The area was expected to be clear before international flight peak time after midnight, he said.
A Qantas and Emirates flight have been delayed.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman Laurie Crowther said no one was injured in the incident. Most of the damage was caused by water from the sprinklers.
He said the area was evacuated.
