Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG)'s new Terminal (T3) has already taken shape, which will be put into service in the first half of next year, the airport said on Feb. 2.
According to the airport, the construction of T3 and the third runway has been completed 90% and 40%, respectively.
The project includes a new 530,000-square-meter terminal and a 3,800-meter-long, 75-meter-wide runway, as well as related supporting facilities, which is expected to be basically completed by the end of 2015 and put into use in the first half of next year. The airport's airfield will reach 4F class, which could accommodate the takeoffs and landings of world's largest aircraft Airbus A380 superjumbo.
Upon the completion of new terminal and 3rd runway, Chongqing Airport will expand its terminal covering to 700,000 square meters with up to 200 gates, and double its annual transport capacity to handle 45 million passengers and 1.1 million tons of cargo and mail.
Due to its enormous development potential, many airlines usher into Chongqing and add more capacity in the city. The airport disclosed that Hainan Airlines (HU) is scheduled to open a new service from Chongqing to Rome this year.
In 2014, the airport registered a year-on-year growth of 15.8 percent in passenger traffic, the fastest growth for 2014 among the 10 busiest airports in China.
Currently, Chongqing Airport has opened 198 domestic routes to 107 destinations around the world, with 135 regional and international flights weekly.
