Airports in China are finally responding to complaints about the high-cost of food in their retail outlets.
Beijing Capital International Airport moved to regulate and slash prices recently.
It's now been joined by Shenzhen International Airport, which has just announced price-cuts of up to 50 percent for food and beverage sold in restaurants.
After the price adjustment, passengers can enjoy a set meal for only 15 yuan. The airport says every restaurant will offer fast food priced below 19 yuan.
Huang Chuanqi, board chairman of Shenzhen International Airport, said, "The price adjustment involves food and beverages, some of them now cost only half of the previous prices. We offer free water at the airport, and some soft beverages cost only 3 to 4 yuan. We also offer Starbucks coffee which costs around 20 yuan."
Passengers have long complained about the high prices of food and beverages at airport. Customers used to complain against expensive food such as bowls of noodles costing 45 yuan. But now many airports are making efforts to lower their food prices.
Huang Chuanqi said, "We are cooperating with restaurants to reduce rents and to give customers more benefits."
Currently, more airports including Qingdao International Airport and Guangzhou's Baiyun Airport are reforming their retail system by diversifying restaurant levels. They are introducing more popular fast food outlets as well as keeping some high-end restaurants.
