The Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) has just completed construction of its much-anticipated third terminal. Officials are now gearing up for trial runs prior to the terminal's official opening in mid February.
After three years of construction and 27 billion yuan, the No. 3 terminal at the Beijing Capital International Airport is set to be officially unveiled on February 29.
The brand new terminal will help accommodate the surge in airline passengers during the 2008 Olympics next August. Officials are making sure there will be no hiccups, once the terminal begins operation.
Vice manager of Capital Airports Holdings Co., owner of Beijing Capital International Airport, Huang Gang said: "There will be three test runs in January and three in February. The trial operations will focus on equipment installations and passenger flow."
Airport officials say Shandong Airlines, Sichuan Airlines and a few other carriers will be the first group to settle in the new facility.
Once the new terminal is online, the Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) will be able to carry up to 82 million passengers a year, more than double the current annual capacity of 35 million. It's now recruiting 8,000 volunteers to participate in the six trial runs set for January and early February.
