Australia's Transport Safety Bureau confirmed today that teams have just eight weeks left to find the missing plane that vanished between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing.

Investigators have less than 6,000 square miles of the Indian Ocean sea bed to cover after the two year operation.

But it seems they are no closer to solving one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history.

Australia, Malaysia and China have already spent nearly 100 million pounds on investigating the mystery disappearance of the Boeing 777, which vanished on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8 2014 with 289 passengers and crew.

The plane, which turned around mid-flight, is believed to have plunged into the Indian Ocean.

But in the last two years, vessels using hi-tech equipment have been unable to find a single trace of the Boeing 777 - although debris has washed ashore on Reunion Island and Mozambique.

Now the Australian government revealed in its annual budget that there would be no more funding for the expensive search of the 46,000 square mile search area beyond July.

Investigators, who have less than 6,000 square miles of the Indian Ocean sea bed left to cover, hope to complete the sonar scan of the underwater search area by the end of June.

A spokesman for the bureau added: "In the absence of credible new information that leads to the identification of a specific location of the aircraft, governments have agreed that there will be no further expansion of the search area."

Three vessels with high-tech sonar scanning equipment are involved in the current search.

But Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker has criticised the decision, saying there should be no "price limit" on the operation.

He claims it remains crucial for countries solve the mystery of what happened, adding: "For me as the CEO of an airline, it's very concerning that the international community for monetary purposes are going to abandon the search for this aeroplane."

"I don't think there is any amount that is too much to find why this tragedy happened where over 200 people lost their lives."
