A UPS Airlines McDonnel Douglas MD-11, Registration N277UP performing freight flight 5X61 from Seoul to Anchorage, Alaska, skidded off runway at Incheon International Airport on Monday night, Yonhap News reported.
The incident happened while the plane was departing on the airport's runway 33L around 10:45 p.m. local time when the crew aborted the take-off at a considerable high speed.
The pilots were unable to stop the aircraft within the remaining lengh of the runway and overran coming to a stop on soft ground approximately 200 meters north of the runway. It appears the pilots turned the aircraft to the left of the centreline to avoid running head-on into the approach masts.
The MD-11 struck several runway lights, as well as the ILS-antenna. Its nosegear collapsed causing its foreward fuselage to drop to the ground resulting in major damage to both engines #1 and #3.
All the four crew members onboard evacuated the aircraft safely via the L1 exit emergency slide.
Incheon International Airport closed the 33L/15R runways, saying operations are unaffected.
The reason to reject the takeoff is unknown at present. According to JACDEC, Darkness prevailed at the time, but local weather was calm and the visibility was good.
