Ruili Airlines has filed an application with the CAAC Southwest Regional Administration, seeking to expand its business license coverage to operate international flights.
The Kunming-based airline is currently permitted to operate cargo and passenger services within China, the CAAC said.
It is now applying to expand its business scope to operate domestic cargo and passenger services - including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan services, as well as international cargo and passenger services to the neighboring countries.
Pending government approval, Ruili Airlines will start international operations in the near future.
It also becomes the eighth domestic airline which applied for expanding business scope following Air ChangAn, Hebei Airlines, Kunming Airlines, Dalian Airlines, China Express, Lucky Air, Zhejiang Loong Air and Juneyao Airlines.
Ruili Airlines placed an order for six Boeing 787-9s at the 2016 Farnborough air show, which will be its first wide-bodies. The order remains subject to government approvals.
Chairman Ma Zhanwei said at that time it is considering flying to London and North America.
The Transportation Department of CAAC is now soliciting public comments on the application until February 4, 2017.
