The portion of an air fare needed to pay for jet fuel is approaching 40 percent, compared with 15 percent in 2000, according to the Air Transport Association (ATA).
Despite repeated attempts to boost fares, major U.S. airlines have been unable to offset their skyrocketing fuel costs, which have drastically cut their profit margins.
