The Zhanjiang Airport relocation project began construction on Oct 19. It is a major project to promote the high quality development of Guangdong's civil aviation and make Zhanjiang an engine driving economic growth in western Guangdong.

According to the Guangdong Airport Group, Zhanjiang Airport will open routes covering the whole country, Southeast Asia, and Northeast Asia after the relocation, as well as strive to expand its European and American routes. In addition, the expressway, rail transit, and high-speed rail supporting the airport will make it into an integrated transportation hub.

From now to 2021, Zhanjiang Airport will gradually be built as an important regional airport in the western Guangdong and the Beibu Gulf area. By 2021, the airport is expected to have an annual passenger throughput of more than 4 million and will have air links among 45 cities. International and regional passenger traffic will reach more than 150,000.

After the relocation (2022 to 2025), Zhanjiang Airport is expected to have a passenger throughput of 10 million. It will introduce one or two Zhanjiang-based airlines, with a domestic route network covering large and medium-sized cities, as well as key tourist cities across the country, in addition to international routes expanding to Northeast Asia. By 2025, international and regional passenger traffic is expected to reach 250,000.

The project includes a 3,200-meter-long runway and parallel taxiway, 30 parking spaces, a terminal building with a construction area of 61,800 square meters, as well as operational support facilities in the first phase. It will have the capacity to meet an annual passenger throughput of 5.1 million, as well as a cargo and mail throughput of 31,000 tons.

It is predicted that the new Zhanjiang Airport will lead to the development of a large-scale airport industrial economic belt, which will drive the production, technology, capital, trade, and population of the western Guangdong region, as well as promote the construction of a coastal economic belt in western Guangdong.
