Commercial airplane parts manufacturer Boeing Tianjin Composites (BTC) has broken ground on an ambitious expansion project, which will add more than 20,000 square meters to the site's footprint and increase its total working area to 83,900 square meters when completed in 2021.
The so-called "Phase III" expansion will more than double the site's current production space and feature numerous new work areas and amenities, including updated offices and conference rooms, a new employee canteen, pantry, underground parking lot, fitness center, and shower rooms, and a baby-care room.
"Since first coming to China more than 47 years ago, Boeing has been committed to investing in Chinese communities and working with local partners to deepen our roots and broaden our presence here," said Sherry Carbary, president, Boeing China. "The expansion of BTC is just the latest demonstration of Boeing's dedication to grow alongside China's aviation industry and build the future together."
The expanded facility is designed to incorporate the latest in environmentally sustainable building practices, including solar panels to power daily operation, waste-water and rain-water reclamation, LED lighting throughout the factory, and water-saving utilities in the bathrooms. BTC leaders say they plan to apply for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) "Platinum" certification--the highest level of green-building certification granted by the globally recognized LEED organization.
A joint venture between The Boeing Company and Aviation Industry Corporation of China, Ltd. (AVIC), BTC currently manufactures roughly 13,000 composite parts and assemblies each month for all of Boeing's commercial airplane models. To date, the facility has delivered nearly 1.5 million high-quality parts that can be found in airplanes flying all over the world.
The site has also maintained a sterling record for workplace safety and recently celebrated reaching the milestone of 10 million working hours without an injury that required an employee to miss time at work.
"BTC was Tianjin's first aviation facility and Boeing's first manufacturing joint venture in China when it was established in 2001," said Dan Park, general manager, Boeing Tianjin Composites. "Today, it has developed into the city's largest aviation manufacturing employer, with more than 1,100 employees, a critical part of Boeing's supply chain, and a proud example of China's growing aviation industry."
