China's TOP3 Airlines Record over 80% YoY Drop of Passenger Traffic As Virus Hits Travel

Air China
In February 2020, Air China Limited (the "Company"), and its subsidiaries (the "Group"), being affected by the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic, recorded decreases in combined passenger traffic (measured by revenue passenger kilometers (the "RPK")) as compared to the same period last year and as compared to the same period last month. Passenger capacity (measured by available seat kilometers (the "ASK")) recorded a year-on-year decrease of 68.1% and passenger traffic recorded a year-on-year decrease of 80.5%. For domestic routes, passenger capacity decreased by 72.4% and passenger traffic decreased by 83.9%, as compared to the same period last year. For international routes, passenger capacity decreased by 59.5% and passenger traffic decreased by 73.2%, as compared to the same period last year. Passenger capacity on regional routes decreased by 82.9%, and passenger traffic recorded a decrease of 92.4%, as compared to the same period last year.
The overall passenger load factor was 51.4%, representing a decrease of 32.6 percentage points as compared to the same period last year. The passenger load factor for domestic routes decreased by 35.9 percentage points and for international routes decreased by 27.4 percentage points as compared to the same period last year, and the passenger load factor for regional routes decreased by 45.7 percentage points year-on-year.
In terms of cargo operations, cargo capacity (measured by available freight tonne kilometers (the "AFTK")) decreased by 66.4%, cargo and mail traffic decreased by 55.8% and the volume of cargo and mail carried decreased by 55.4% as compared to the same period last year. The cargo load factor was 40.0%, representing a year-on-year increase of 9.6 percentage points.

China Eastern Airlines
In February 2020, China Eastern Airlines Corporation Limited (the "Company") recorded decreases of 72.66% year-on-year in passenger transportation capacity (measured by available seat-kilometres), among which, the passenger transportation capacity of its domestic, international and regional routes decreased by 77.99%, 61.74% and 84.21% year-on-year, respectively; passenger traffic volume (measured by revenue passengerkilometres) decreased by 83.74% year-on-year, among which, the passenger traffic volume of its domestic, international and regional routes decreased by 88.47%, 73.85% and 92.82% year-on-year, respectively; and passenger load factor decreased by 34.24 percentage points year-on-year to 50.28%, among which, the passenger load factor of its domestic, international and regional routes decreased by 40.76, 26.23 and 43.73 percentage points year-on-year, respectively.
In relation to freight transportation, the freight transportation business of the Company only consists of bellyhold space freight operated through passenger aircraft, and such business is under contractual operation by a subsidiary of the controlling shareholder of the Company. Freight load volume in February 2020 decreased by 57.83% year-on-year.

China Southern Airlines
In February 2020, China Southern Airlines Company Limited (the "Company") and its subsidiaries (collectively, the "Group") actively responded to changes in market demand, timely adjusted its operation strategy, optimized its capacity allocation and reduced some flights. Passenger capacity (measured by available seat kilometres ("ASK")) of the Group decreased by 73.07% as compared to the same period last year (a year-on-year ("YoY") basis). Of which, passenger capacity for domestic, regional and international routes decreased by 74.31%, 91.05% and 69.34%, respectively as compared to the same period last year. Compared to the same period last year, passenger traffic (measured by revenue passenger kilometres ("RPK")) decreased by 85.11%. Of which, passenger traffic for domestic, regional and international routes decreased by 85.95%, 95.92% and 82.69%, respectively as compared to the same period last year. The passenger load factor was 47.11%, representing a decrease of 38.11 percentage points as compared to the same period last year. Of which, the passenger load factor for domestic, regional and international routes decreased by 38.77 percentage points, 41.86 percentage points and 36.92 percentage points, respectively, as compared to the same period last year.
In terms of cargo operations, in February 2020, cargo capacity (measured by available tonne kilometers ("ATK") - Cargo and Mail) decreased by 49.76% as compared to the same period last year. Cargo and mail traffic (measured by revenue tonne kilometres ("RTK") - Cargo and Mail) decreased by 12.76% as compared to the same period last year. The cargo and mail load factor was 58.75%, representing an increase of 24.91 percentage points as compared to the same period last year.
