Death Toll Rises to 11 in Guatemalan Air Accident

The death toll of the Guatemalan air accident rose to 11 on Aug. 25, as a U.S. citizen who had survived the accident died, Guatemalan aviation authorities said.
The accident occurred on the morning of Aug. 24 when a small plane crashed into a hill near the municipality of Cabanas, bordering Mexico.
According to information from Guatemala City, four of the 11 deaths were Guatemalans including the pilot and the co-pilot. The other seven were Americans.
Those U.S. victims included members of Choice Humanitarian, a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in the state of Utah in the United States, which arranges relief missions across the world.
They had gone to Guatemala to work in the rural and impoverished areas.
Authorities said that the three survivors were also U.S. citizens.
Civil Aeronautics Agency director Juan Jose Carlos said at least 14 people were aboard the plane which belonged to the company Aero Ruta Maya.
The aircraft supposedly had an engine failure, he added.
