Australia: Perth Airport Moves to End Parking Shortage
Nov. 14, 2008
Perth Airport is hoping to put an end to its parking woes with the opening of two modern long-term parking stations that allow passengers to check-in, buy snacks and monitor flight schedules while they wait for a shuttle bus.
The AU$500,000 air-conditioned hubs are located about 400 metres from the domestic terminal on either side of Brearley Avenue.
They also support about 3,000 car bays in total.
Qantas passengers can also check-in from the parking stations before boarding one of the shuttle buses, which arrive every 15 minutes and take about five minutes to reach the terminal.
The first of the stations opened this week with the second to open next week.
Perth Airport has been under intense pressure to improve its parking set-up in recent years, with politicians amid scores of passengers branding the situation amongst the worst in the world.
The new long-term car parks are expected to free up short-term parking close to the terminal, which has been the source of congestion.
The daily rate for short-term parking at both terminals recently increased from AU$25 to AU$26. Long-term parking daily rates remain at AU$17 for one to three days with the cost of each day after now AU$7.
Another two parking areas with about 500 bays each are also being constructed near the new parking stations and Perth Airport spokesman Malcolm Bradshaw said further bays and stations would be built based on demand.
Passenger Kieran Steadman said he discovered the stations while driving around the airport and was impressed with the set-up.
Mr Bradshaw said the new parking stations would eventually be relocated when the international and domestic terminals were merged.
