Qantas will almost double fuel levies on direct flights to Britain and Europe as it transfers the pain of higher fuel prices to passengers.

Michael O'Leary, chief executive of Ryanair, must have many talents to have reached his position in life, but I had not appreciated until last week that a flair for ironic cheek was one of them. Mr O'Leary appeared at a press conference to publicise his threat to sue the Government if it does not remove the recent restrictions on hand luggage by Thursday; a Union Jack was draped behind him and a Winston Churchill impersonator sat next to him. All of this was done in order to "keep Britain flying".

On 18th August 2006, Qantas said that, due to continuing record fuel prices, it would increase its international fuel surcharges for tickets issued on or after 31 August 2006.
- Copa Holdings Profits Continue Ascent[Aug. 17, 2006]
Copa Holdings, parent of Panama's Copa Airlines and Colombia's AeroRepublica, reported second-quarter net income of $22.9 million, up 51.3% over $15.1 million earned in the year-ago quarter, on a 39.4% jump in revenues to $191.5 million attributable in large part to Copa's acquisition of AeroRepublica last year that also contributed to hefty increases in traffic and capacity (ATWOnline, March 9, 2005).The results continue a string of positive quarters for the company, which produced rising profits in both 2004 and 2005 and record quarterly income in the first quarter (ATWOnline, May 18). They are all the more impressive considering that AeroRepublica lost $7.1 million in the most recent quarter.

On 17th August 2006, Qantas announced a profit before tax of $671 million for the year ended 30 June 2006, a 26.6 per cent decrease on the year to 30 June 2005.

- Bankruptcy Push Delta into $2.2b Loss[Aug. 10, 2006]
Hit hard by costs associated with its Chapter 11 reorganization, Delta Air Lines yesterday reported a second-quarter net loss of $2.2 billion, widened from a deficit of $382 million in the year-ago period.The airline said it earned $175 million in net income for the quarter excluding restructuring items, reversing a net loss of $304 million excluding special items in the year-ago quarter. "Delta's second quarter results continue to reflect both the solid progress we are making in our restructuring and the substantial challenges we are facing from high fuel prices," CFO Edward Bastian said. "We are aggressively restructuring our business."
- Hawaiian Reports Widened 2Q Loss[Aug. 09, 2006]
Hawaiian Airlines parent Hawaiian Holdings reported a second-quarter net loss of $26.4 million, widened from a net loss of $1.67 million in the year-ago quarter.President and CEO Mark Dunkerley said the carrier's earnings were affected negatively by rising fuel costs and an "increase in competitor capacity" on both inter-island flights and transpacific routes. He acknowledged that Hawaiian's "progress in this quarter has lagged that of several of our competitors." The airline faced new competition during the quarter when Mesa Air Group launched its go! subsidiary on June 9.
